At JIRP we all eat meals together. Students, staff, and faculty all take shifts on cook crew. Cook crews, assigned daily, prepare three hot meals for 50+ people, including catering to any special dietary requirements. Many days you will pack yourself a “trail lunch” for eating in the field instead of a hot lunch in camp. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free diets. We can also accommodate a variety of specific ingredient allergies/intolerances.
All that said, the logistics of buying, transporting, and storing food for 50+ people impose significant limitations on the range of foods we have available in the field. Limiting your diet will further narrow your options. Many participants with voluntary or mild diet preferences choose to relax their choices for the field season. If you are willing to relax your eating preferences, please make that decision before filling out this form- we buy a lot of foodstuffs ahead of time, and a significant portion of our budget goes to groceries. Changing your dietary preferences mid-season for non-medical reasons (ie because you’re tired of eating oatmeal) makes more work for our team.
This form includes a space to list foods to which you are allergic. Entering this information in this form makes it easily accessible for the cook crews. This form is not the place to disclose a severe allergy for the first time. Please enter all severe allergies into your Health History Form, and be sure you have a conversation with our staff and/or our medic to ensure we can safely accommodate your needs.
