Thank you for your interest in applying for the Juneau Icefield Research Program’s Medical Faculty. This application is for an Expedition Doctor-type position; with the expedition in the field, although often (not always) in camp and not out on the glacier. We ask that you handle medical needs for all 50-60 members of the Expedition past the first aid our field staff apply. In some cases this may involve traveling out to the glacier via ski or snowmobile, or consulting with one of our field staff over the radio. This most often includes athletic injuries (strains, bruises, and fractured bones), blister care, and burns (sunburns and kitchen burns), although it may include a whole range of other issues. Evacuation to definitive care via helicopter may take several days due to weather delay. We provide an expedition medical supplies kit for the use of the medical faculty.
Other responsibilities of this position include teaching some lectures or workshops on wilderness medicine, possibly traveling between camps on significant traverse sections with a trail party (up to two days of skiing and technical mountaineering), and generally helping out in camp (cook crew, chores, minor camp maintenance, etc.).
This position is not compensated. We provide transportation (via helicopter), and room and board in Juneau and on the Icefield. It is your responsibility to cover your travel to and from Juneau and your personal equipment.
